A New Concept in Retirement Income

Baby boomers are retiring in droves. This year is “peak 65,” with a record 11,200 boomers turning 65 every day. At a time when fewer retirees have pensions, companies want to help consumers create an income stream that lasts. One way to do that is through annuities. One financial services pro told me that 2024 would be the year when annuities finally make inroads into 401(k) plans. The Secure 2.0 retirement law passed at the end of 2022 included some measures to facilitate this. It could certainly make sense to annuitize a portion of your savings—around 25% is generally recommended—to ensure guaranteed income for life. Another new type of fund product offers payouts minus the annuity component. This new series of funds from Stone Ridge Asset Management offers investors monthly payouts up until age 100. You buy the fund that corresponds to your gender at birth and birth year, with years 1948 to 1963 currently available. It’s an intriguing concept that we’ll probably see more of in the coming years.
