| | The Canadian Precast Concrete Industry Roadmap to Net-Zero by 2050Decarbonization has become a top priority for the concrete industry in Canada Over the next thirty years, the precast concrete industry in Canada is expected to grow significantly as the demand for new prefabricated infrastructure, commercial and residential structures continue to increase. If no action is taken now, carbon emissions will continue to increase with industry growth. CPCI has developed a Roadmap which presents a path forward for the Canadian precast concrete industry toward net-zero emissions by 2050. The Roadmap, which aligns with the net-zero roadmaps developed by the Cement Association of Canada (CAC) and the Global Concrete and Cement Association (GCCA), has a multipronged approach to reducing carbon emissions. The roadmap focuses on four key areas for carbon reduction: - Optimize Precast Concrete Production
- Optimize Design & Construction of precast structures
- Quantify and Account for Carbonation, the natural uptake of atmospheric CO2 by concrete
- Implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Technology

| CIB to provide $70 million financing to CAPREIT to retrofit 60 multi-residential buildingsThe Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has reached financial close on a $70 million loan to CAPREIT to finance deep energy and decarbonization upgrades at selected buildings which will benefit residents living in approximately 14,000 suites. The projects are expected to result in an estimated 40 per cent average reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually in the retrofitted properties. Building upgrades include energy recovery among various mechanical systems, installation of high-efficiency electric heat pumps, building automation systems, lighting retrofits and sub-metering. The CIB loan, which is part of its Building Retrofits Initiative, helps to close economic gaps associated with deep energy retrofit projects that are not typically economically viable with traditional sources of capital. CAPREIT is a leader in affordable rental housing in Canada. | |

Treehouse Village Ecohousing is Atlantic Canada's first cohousing community in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia and contains 30 condominium homes in four, two-storey buildings. Choosing to construct these homes to the Phius standard, with its focus on high levels of insulation, an airtight building envelope and high-performance ventilation systems to maintain air exchange without leaking heat in winter or cold in summer, ensures that these homes are not only healthy and comfortable but also cost much less to heat and cool. Equipped with the rooftop photovoltaic panels, the homes require 75 per cent less energy to heat than a similar code-built home, with an estimated yearly heating bill of $200. Mitsubishi Electric Sales Canada Inc. supplied mini-split heat pumps to the 30 units.
