This week, more than a billion people are ushering in a new year with holidays and celebrations to mark the first new moon of the lunar calendar. For many East Asian communities, each year is associated with one of 12 animals from the Chinese zodiac; now, the year of the dragon is nigh – and as the dragon is the zodiac's only mythical creature, it's considered an especially auspicious year. In Chinese culture the dragon has historically been associated with water and imperial strength; in more recent years it has come to connote prosperity, harmony and good fortune. But it's not only in China that the dragon is an object of fear and fascination. Today we explore four depictions of dragons from very different cultural contexts. This is part of our 'Four things to see' series, which offers you a new way in to some of the world's greatest collections, sponsored by Bloomberg Connects: the free arts and culture app.

While some believe Salvador Dalí was channelling Einstein's theory of relativity in his famous melted clocks, the artist insisted that his painted timepieces were simply 'the tender, extravagant and solitary paranoiac-critical Camembert of time and space'. Nothing is straightforward when it comes to the passing of time, whether we imagine it in moments, generations or epochs. Artists across centuries and cultures have been captivated by the forward march of time; since yesterday marks the anniversary of Dalí's birth 120 years ago, this week we look at four works that depict or relate to the passage of time. This is part of our 'Four things to see' series, which offers you a new way in to some of the world's greatest collections, sponsored by Bloomberg Connects: the free arts and culture app.
