| I got my start in the beauty industry over 10 years ago, and in some ways, things feel just as electrified as they did then (but this time with TikTok). With trends moving at lightning speed, a dizzying number of new products hitting the market every day, and celebrity skincare lines launching nonstop (more on that later), I hope this newsletter cuts through some of that noise for you and serves as a place of unique discovery for all things beauty. |

Three Questions With … Mario Dedivanovic |
|
|
Makeup by Mario's new Surreal Skin foundation is absolutely worth the TikTok hype. It leaves a dewy, skinlike finish that is unlike anything I've ever used (and I've tested everything). Here, an exclusive chat with the legendary makeup artist. —Katie Intner, associate beauty editor |
What's the last thing you bought at Sephora? It might have been one of our products, just for fun. Every now and then, I go in and buy something. I also bought Kiehl's musk fragrance. Whenever I see it, I grab it because I don't want to ever run out of it. It's one of my new signature scents. Right now, I'm obsessed with Le Labo Santal 33. I got it for Christmas. I didn't know about it before. It's so delicious. Every time I wear it, someone stops me to ask what I'm wearing. |
Have you ever had a foundation fail? There have been several instances over the years where I didn't have a proper foundation shade for a client. One time, I was working on a deeper client, and my assistant brought the bag for my lighter clients and I didn't have any foundation at all. They call me the mix master at work because I like to mix and blend things, and that's exactly what I did. I mixed a concoction of concealer, a moisturizer to thin it out, and some sculpting products from my pigment palette. It made a beautiful base. You started out in beauty selling fragrance. Who is the best-smelling person you've ever met? I have to say it's Kim Kardashian. I've worked so closely with her for almost 15 years, and that woman just always smells good. There has never been a time where she hasn't smelled perfect. We always joke about it, because when we work together we are extremely close physically. It's not even the smell of a perfume; it's fresh and clean. No matter what, she literally always smells so pleasant. |

| "A reformulated product can be hit or miss, but Dior's updated Capture Totale serum hits every mark for me. This version is slightly less fragrant (which I love). The silky texture melts into my skin, leaving an immediate glow. Thanks to this, I've even collected a few 'your skin looks great' compliments from my mom." —Jamie Wilson, beauty editor |

"Despite how many creams I use, my skin can't get enough hydration in this cold New York weather. This thick cream hits the reset button on my dry complexion and has been a lifesaver when I overexfoliate (which I admit happens on occasion.) A little goes a long way, so it's cost-effective and will last me the whole winter season." —Katie |

| "I truly do not have more than five minutes to do my makeup on most days, so I've been gravitating toward multipurpose balms and creams. I have always loved Nars Orgasm—it's the perfect pink with gold shimmer—and in the brand's iconic multiple format, I love that I can quickly swipe it across my lips, cheeks, and eyes for a cool monochrome look. It's not only pretty, it's foolproof." —Jenna |

"This buttery-soft lip color, laced with mango seed, avocado, and argan oils, is deeply hydrating—but not so slick it slides around and settles into my lip lines. And my favorite shade, Oasis, is the perfect '90s-inspired pinky neutral (think Amanda Woodward in Melrose Place)." —Genevieve Monsma, freelance beauty editor |

| "This hydrating serum from Joanna Vargas has become a staple in my nighttime routine before dabbing on moisturizer and features a subtle, uplifting scent that isn't overpowering. And since only two pumps at most are needed to soak up its benefits, a little of this amino acid-, niacinamide-, and red algae–based serum goes a long way to minimize fine lines and even my skin tone as I sleep." —Tiffany Dodson, associate beauty commerce editor |

| What Does Elle Fanning Smell Like? |
|
|
| "Growing up, my grandmother had a tray of perfumes that I would sneak using and mix all of them together. I felt so mature but would come out smelling crazy and, like, I needed a bath. In high school, I wore the sweetest cotton-candy fragrance I got at the mall. I think it was even called Cotton Candy. It had glitter in it and was, like, a two-in-one sparkly body spray. I've always liked those overly sweet fragrances rather than something musky; that's not me as much. But it's still fun to experiment." |

| Meanwhile, in Celebrity Beauty … |
|

If it seems like every celebrity has a makeup, skincare, or supplement brand these days—you're right! It's chaos, but some of the products are actually good. This month, we're looking at John Legend, whose brand Loved01 recently dropped at CVS stores. Powered by sea buckthorn and rosehip oils, the first six products are all about boosting moisture and cost less than $15 a pop. My (and Chrissy Teigen's) favorite is the exfoliating cleanser, which can be used on both your face and body. Here's what Legend had to say when I Zoomed with him ahead of the launch. —Jenna |
"We didn't want to just be another celebrity brand; we wanted to have a reason for existence and meet a need that was being unmet. We launched Loved01 with melanin-rich skin in mind, not as an afterthought. Melanin-rich skin has some unique qualities. We lose moisture faster and we deal with hyperpigmentation more often. There needed to be skincare that really focused on our needs, celebrated and cared about our skin, and gave us some products that were really formulated with our skin in mind. And on top of all that, we wanted to make sure it was accessible and available and affordable. So we are in drugstores; we're in places where folks are shopping regularly and at prices that they can afford." |

Can't Stop Thinking About … Lizzo's Monochrome Moment |
|
|
I'm obsessed with Lizzo in general, but her stunning and monochromatic 2023 Grammys red-carpet beauty makeup had me living. If you're like me and want to copy her look ASAP, makeup artist Alexx Mayo used Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk Blush Wand in the shade Dream Pop. —Tiffany |
