Rising mortgage rates have cooled demand, and the competition of recent years has receded. Even so, properties that are in great condition and priced properly are moving quickly. Inventory is relatively low and may stay that way if would-be sellers decide they don’t want to swap their low-rate mortgage for a new one at rates pushing 7%. Stiff competition had meant that buyers had to rush—and sometimes, forgo safeguards like inspections—to close a deal.
