Is the Banking Crisis Over?
No images? Click here ![]() ![]() By Elizabeth O'Brien | March 19, 2023 The last two weeks saw the biggest bank failures since 2008. The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, and the subsequent failure of Signature Bank, recalled the crisis of 15 years ago, which shook the very foundation of the global financial system. Experts say this time is different. What brought down Silicon Valley Bank was a poorly managed balance sheet, not widespread systemic risk. While quick action appears to have averted catastrophe, fear remains that contagion from the banking sector could spread into the wider economy. Needless to say, it’s a good time to make sure that the money you have in the bank stays within the limits of FDIC insurance, or $250,000 per tax ID, per insured bank, per ownership category (so a couple’s jointly held account would have its own protection on top of any individual accounts held in just one spouse’s name). Federal regulators did make depositors at Silicon Valley Bank whole even if their deposits exceeded the FDIC limit, but it’s best not to count on that happening in every instance. ![]() Banks Survived Another Week.
