It's Wednesday, gamers, which means it's time for another WIRED Games newsletter! Welcome back! We actually have some good gaming news this week, since we've had some new releases that a few of our contributors felt were worth checking out. Hopefully you'll find something really interesting. And if you're playing something new that we haven't discussed, let us know at games@WIRED.com and we'll check it out! First up this week, take a look at Will Bedingfield's piece about how the success of The Last of Us, both the game and the TV show, suggests everything is going to be transmedia in the future. In other words, every successful game is going to wind up with a TV series and other associated world-building franchises. But that can be a wonderful thing if the quality is high, and The Last of Us has proven that it can be. Next, let's head into VR, where Adrienne So had a chance to try out a game that I've known about and loved for a while but haven't had a chance to play (because, sadly, I don't have VR gear at home) called Tentacular. Not only do you get to play as an adorable giant kaiju, but you were raised by the inhabitants of your island, and now that you're all big, it's time for you to get a job and help the people of the island the way they helped raise you. Sounds cute, right? It also happens to be one of the best examples of VR done right in a video game, and more VR game devs could learn from it. And speaking of new games, Reid McCarter took a look at Like a Dragon: Ishin!—the latest in the long-running Yakuza franchise—which is set back in Japan's Bakamatsu period instead of in the modern settings the games usually have. Even though the game doesn't have any actual Yakuza characters in it, it's definitely a Yakuza game, and worth a look if you like the franchise. Reid isn't finished yet though, because he also took a look at Company of Heroes 3, a game that in some ways sounds like it could have come out years ago but in other ways is a refreshingly modern take on the strategy genre, which is seeing a bit of a resurgence, thanks to last year's Age of Empires IV and remakes of the classic Age of Empires II. But Company of Heroes 3 takes us to the North African desert during World War II, and even manages to refresh a very common video game setting. Omar Gallaga, on the other hand, is playing games in real life, as opposed to on a computer. Well, it's still on a computer, just the computer is a huge box that's 12 feet on all sides. They're called immersive gameboxes, and one may be on the way to a movie theater or a game center near you. He took one for a spin and reported back on how a small London startup is taking the IRL gaming world by storm. Finally, because last week was March 10, also affectionately known as Mario Day, Louryn Strampe rounded up some of the best Mario Day deals. While some of those may have expired, others are still good right now, so check it out! If you grab anything great, let us know. I'll see you back here next week. |
