Museums of the Mind – crowds

A wander through Apollo's archives

The Apollo Museums of the Mind newsletter is an opportunity to wander through the magazine's archive, take some unexpected paths and make new finds. Every week, it has a different theme. This week: crowds. From Bruegel's riotous carnivals to Lowry's throngs of matchstick men, gatherings en masse have been a mainstay of art history. This week, we progress through William Hogarth's jostling crowds, and cast a quizzical eye on the busy streets of Revolution-era Paris with Louis-Léopold Boilly. We cram ourselves into a private view at the Royal Academy alongside William Powell Frith, and dust off our medieval costume to rub shoulders with Edwardian pageant-goers. Finally, we consider the methods of crowd control employed by museums in recent years. We hope you enjoy this week's selection.
