Chasing the Social Security COLA

Chalk it up to fluctuating prices—inflation has been volatile over the past year, says Mary Johnson, the analyst who makes the projections for The Senior Citizens League. She said she wouldn’t be surprised if her estimate dips again in the months before the Social Security Administration announces the official cost-of-living adjustment in October. Whether it’s 2.7%, 3% or something else, suffice it to say the raise won’t be enough for many Social Security recipients. Prices remain high, and despite the historic COLA of 8.7% this year, many older adults are still trying to catch up after last year’s steep increases to everything from groceries to gas.
