How do you measure happiness? It's tricky, but a recent study tackled the problem and discovered that if you combine enough metrics—from rates of depression to career satisfaction and even, ambiguously, "safety"—you can get a pretty good idea of how happy a population is. They studied every state in the union, and Westerners will probably not be surprised to find that four of our own made the top 10.
