Hi! It's Wednesday, and this is Megan filling in for Alan for this week's WIRED Games newsletter. Let's chat, shall we? First up in news: Unity president and CEO John Riccitiello is out at Unity, weeks after calls for his resignation rang across the industry over the recent "runtime fee" pricing debacle. James Whitehurst has stepped in as interim CEO while the company starts a "comprehensive search" for a new chief executive. Riccitiello isn't the only big-name gaming exec making an exit, either. Bethesda's senior vice president and head of publishing, Pete Hines, has said his farewells and announced his retirement. It wasn't an easy decision, he says, but "after an amazing career, culminating in the incredible launch of Starfield, it feels like the time is right." It certainly is interesting timing, coming in hot on the heels of Microsoft (which owns Bethesda) closing the deal on its eye-popping $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. As Angela Watercutter wrote, the acquisition "offers a peek at gaming's future, one in which Microsoft now holds a sizable chunk of the market." On a more sobering note, Matt Burgess has a great (and depressing) read on the spread of porn made nonconsensually with deepfakes, a form of harassment that has become more common for female Twitch streamers and beyond. According to Matt, by the end of this year, "more [deepfake porn] videos will have been produced in 2023 than the total number of every other year combined." If you're looking for some game recommendations for your Xbox Game Pass, Reece Rogers has you covered with a tidy list of the 11 must-play games you can check out right now. And lastly, for anyone in need of a little shopping guidance, Scott Gilbertson and Medea Giordano have searched far and wide for the best Amazon deals (many of which are holdovers from October's Prime Day), including gaming laptops, headphones, and much more. That's all for us this week! Questions, concerns, nice comments? Drop us a line at games@WIRED.com. See you next time. |
