President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will sign an executive order to keep TikTok operating in the U.S. for another 75 days in order to let the app’s Chinese parent company find an American buyer before a ban is implemented.
Trump’s announcement comes one day before the social media platform was set to go offline in the U.S.
“My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress. The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The president said he hopes to keep working with China, which he says is unhappy with the higher tariff rates that were announced on “Liberation Day” this week. In his message, Trump called tariffs the “most powerful Economic tool” at his disposal.
“We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark.’ We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal,” he added.
Trump extended the TikTok deadline on his first day back in office to April 5, giving the China-based ByteDance time to find a U.S. buyer in compliance with a national security law that Congress passed last year.
