Retiring in this country is complicated. First, you have to figure out when to claim Social Security. Then you have to navigate your Medicare options. Both of these tasks, if done right, involve math, and maybe a spreadsheet or two. But the math doesn't end there, because RMDs are right around the corner.
Required minimum distributions are Uncle Sam's way of finally getting his share of retirement savings that's grown tax-deferred for decades. Once you turn 73, the IRS requires you to withdraw a certain amount and pay income taxes on it. The amount is based on your age and the value of your RMD-eligible retirement accounts as of Dec. 31 of the prior year.
Your brokerage firm can do the calculation for you–but they only know about the money you have with them. Your RMD is based on the value of all your applicable accounts, so if those are spread across firms you're going to have to do the math yourself.
Read more about RMDs—and tips for taking them in a volatile market—in today's edition.
