The Big Lesson for Investors This Spring

Barron's Retirement

By Elizabeth O'Brien | Sunday, June 1

So much for "sell in May and go away." The old Wall Street cliché hasn't really held up in recent years. This year it's particularly off, as the S&P 500 closed out its strongest May rally in 35 years. Investors who got spooked and sold out of stocks after the "Liberation Day" losses in April would have missed the mighty recovery that followed.

A downward turn is still possible if the economy sours. But the past eight weeks are a reminder that it's usually best to stay the course, even when markets get choppy. If market gyrations have you up at night, it could be because your asset allocation doesn't match your goals or risk tolerance. Someone approaching retirement shouldn't be 100% in equities, for example. So find a mix you're comfortable with, then leave it alone.

And if you do go away–to the beach or mountains–with luck you'll be too busy or relaxed to worry about your portfolio.
