"Everyone has that one friend with impeccable taste in pop culture," says Kayleigh. "Or, fine, that one friend whose tastes align so perfectly with your own that you're guaranteed a hit whenever they recommend something. My own personal version of this recently urged me to watch K-Pop Demon Hunters. Bloody hell, am I glad she did.
"One of those animated films that makes you mutter, Much too good for children, Trunchbull-style, this vibrant musical does exactly what you'd expect from the title. It follows three wildly successful K-pop superstars – Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoe (Ji Young Yoo) – who harbour a secret: they're also powerful demon slayers, hellbent on protecting the world (and their fans) from soul-sucking horrors.
"They're good at what they do. So good, in fact, that their supernatural enemies are forced to get creative and form a rival boy band of demons in disguise. Cue a plethora of catchy K-pop songs, genre-hopping adventures, deep meditations on self-acceptance and identity and some brilliantly sharp satire on how highly manufactured pop culture has become.
"There's a reason this one's been stuck in Netflix's Top 10 list since its release, everyone. Consider it your gateway drug to the world of K-pop (if you're in need of one), and prepare to have some outrageously good fun in the process. Just don't blame me if every single song on the soundtrack cements itself into your brain forevermore…"
