Breaking: House Republicans Subpoena Jeffrey Epstein Estate for Documents

The House Oversight Committee is compelling the estate of deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein to turn over documents related to his sordid activities.

House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer (R., Ky.) issued a subpoena Monday for unredacted documents and communications in its possession to further the committee’s investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking and the federal government’s knowledge of it.

“The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is reviewing the possible mismanagement of the federal government's investigation of Mr. Jeffrey Epstein and Ms. Ghislaine Maxwell, the circumstances and subsequent investigations of Mr. Epstein's death, the operation of sex-trafficking rings and ways for the federal government to effectively combat them, and potential violations of ethics rules related to elected officials,” Comer said in a statement.

“It is our understanding that the Estate of Jeffrey Epstein is in custody and control of documents that may further the Committee's investigation and legislative goals. Further, it is our understanding the Estate is ready and willing to provide these documents to the Committee pursuant to a subpoena,” Comer added.

In addition, the committee announced that former U.S. Attorney for South Florida Alex Acosta will testify voluntarily for the Oversight Committee’s investigation in September. Acosta infamously agreed to a non-prosecution agreement with Epstein in 2008 to protect him from federal charges and shut down an FBI investigation into Epstein’s activities. Epstein was convicted on state level sex charges in Florida that same year and served a brief jail sentence afterwards.

Acosta resigned from his position as Secretary of Labor during the first Trump administration in 2019 because of renewed scrutiny regarding Epstein’s crimes and the plea deal he received from Acosta’s office.

Comer has already issued subpoenas to several former U.S. attorneys general and FBI directors, former President Bill Clinton, and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Rather than having all of the AGs testify, Comer is allowing former Attorneys General Alberto Gonzales, Jeff Sessions, and Eric Holder to submit written declarations stating they have no information to share about the Epstein case.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr, who served under President Trump from 2019 to 2020, testified last week that he never saw any evidence of wrongdoing by Trump during his friendship with Epstein, as NR previously reported.

Comer has also been in negotiations with Epstein’s longtime girlfriend and accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker serving a 20 year federal prison sentence for crimes she committed during her time with Epstein.

Maxwell, who is seeking a pardon from Trump, recently conducted an interview with the Justice Department where she praised Trump effusively but offered little new information about her sex trafficking operation with Epstein.

The Justice Department interviewed Maxwell during the fallout from the Trump administration’s decision not to release the federal government’s files on Epstein after Trump promised to do so during his 2024 campaign. The Epstein-files saga generated an uncharacteristically harsh backlash from Trump’s MAGA faithful, which dissipated only after the Wall Street Journal reported on a letter Trump sent Epstein for his 50th birthday.

MAGA rallied around Trump once the the Journal’s story came out and Trump is now suing the publication for its reporting. The Journal subsequently reported that Trump is one of many prominent names in the Epstein files, but he is not suspected of any wrongdoing.

Trump and Epstein were friends in the late 1990s and 2000s prior to Epstein conviction in Florida. Trump has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with his relationship to Epstein.

Epstein died in his New York City jail cell while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges in August 2019. Officially ruled a suicide, his death remains the subject of speculation because of its timing and Epstein’s ties to powerful figures, including Trump and Bill Clinton.

The Trump administration concluded that Epstein committed and did not have a “client list” of his close associates as many people were led to believe. Epstein’s powerful associates are already known because of litigation and investigations.
