'Masters of the Universe' Finds Its Roboto...A Major Theft in the Comic Art World

The water cooler horror hit enters its second weekend with $100 million at the global box office, and as we broke a few days ago, it has a prequel centered on everyone's favorite aunt in the works. It will be interesting to see what kind of hold it will have as it becomes a must-watch. Nobody 2, which is a fun late summer watch, will be no match for it.  It's not all about horror or action this week, however.  Early on Tuesday morning, Ryan Reynolds ignited speculation that Deadpool would finally get his dream and share the screen with the Avengers, when he posted an Avengers logo that had been vandalized with graffiti (something Deadpool would do). Sources tell Heat Vision that yes, Deadpool will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. (Don't expect him to actually be joining the Avengers team, though.)  Over at DC Studios, James Gunn says he has a detailed treatment for the next movie in his Superman Saga, and it could go into production sooner than you think. Superman, meanwhile, is on digital as of today, a little over a month after its release. Gunn says it's to allow people to watch it before Peacemaker season two, as the two projects are connected. (We seem to remember Marvel catching slack for its movies and TV shows becoming too intertwined, something it has been trying to back out of for a few years now.)  The move is a bit of a head scratcher for some, as Superman was still grossing around $1 million domestically a day this week (but it does cannily keep the movie in the conversation).  Well, if you dug the robots in Superman's Fortress of Solitude, this scoop may be, sorta, for you...  —Aaron Couch and Borys Kit.   KRISTEN WIIG IS THE MASTER OF HER OWN UNIVERSE. The actress is a late addition to the sprawling cast of He-Man movie Masters of the Universe, which is now in post-production. She will voice Roboto, a member of a corps known as the Heroic Warriors. The character has a transparent metal body allowing one to see the inner workings inside. Roboto also has one arm that features interchangeable hands, such as a claw, laser gun, or axe. The character has traditionally been voiced by a male actor, so Wiig represents a new flavor for it. Domo arigato, Ms. Roboto. The 35-year saga included a string of A-list writers and directors (David Mamet, Martin Scorsese) coming and going, and Disney spending $10 million in development costs trying to find the right script. (This was the heyday of writers getting paid millions, even when movies didnt' get made.) Then, a young producer and a first-time screenwriter cracked the code and got Denzel Washington's attention. NOBODY HAS HAD A CAREER QUITE LIKE BOB ODENKIRK. It was one thing to go from comedy writer and performer on SNL in the late ‘80s to his own beloved HBO sketch comedy series, Mr. Show with Bob and David, in the mid-’90s. But to reinvent himself as an equally effective comedic and dramatic actor in his late 40s and 50s — largely due to his roles as Saul Goodman and Jimmy McGill on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul — is something no one saw coming. The later career twists and turns for the seven-time-Emmy-nominated actor weren’t over yet, as Odenkirk took on yet another challenge that nobody anticipated: action franchise star. Brian Davids spoke with the actor about fight training and doing uncredited writing work on Nobody 2, which drew from his own childhood. The star also revealed he does not miss playing Saul Goodman, but says he'd gladly do a couple more Nobody films. Bob is s'all good, man. THERE'S BEEN A THEFT IN THE COMIC ART WORLD. Art dealer Albert Moy revealed this week that a Steve Ditko splash page from Amazing Spider-Man No. 27 was stolen, and he is asking for the public’s help for its return. “$20k reward for the safe return of my Steve Ditko - Amazing Spider-Man #27 page 1,” he wrote on Instagram this week. “The page was stolen from me.” He asked for the art’s safe return “with no questions asked and no repercussions.” He also shared his lawyer's contact information for those who can help with information. Any collector will have a hard time picking it up or off-loading it. The last time the page was seen publicly was at the Lake Como Comic Art Festival in 2024. It is unclear when it disappeared. The art is valuable no doubt. It’s a 1960s Ditko Spider-Man page, after all, and a splash page. It was worth $250,000 when Moy acquired it in the mid-2010s. It is likely mid-six figures now. “I’m at a loss for words,” Moy told Heat Vision Friday when asked about the theft. “I’m losing a lot of sleep.” Help bring back Moy’s goblin back to him.
