Is there something Very Fishy not to go down at The Irma Stern Museum?
We live in a information age where no news is tantamount to possible gross exploitation - such as the blackout used by the Japanese Imperial Fleet days before the attack on Pearl Harbour.
Similarly to this the sudden 3 day blitz - from rumour - of the recent dissolved UCT Irma Stern Committee (headed up by UCT's Dianna Yach, and Strauss & Co's Frank Kilbourn) to today's (after 50 years) Museum sudden closure - promotes suspicion of involved parties way of handling this incredible national cultural venue, and Irma's Will.
Today (Day 3) there was a sloppy, vague press release by the Irma Stern Museum (See link here https://irmasternmuseum.co.za/irma-sterns-journey.../) about its nostalgic past, and its exciting venture of finding a suitable security vault and potential new venue - that leaves more questions than answers to our information savvy readers.. Given the timing and limited contact with key role plays -Here are some questions we, and I hope you, would like to ask?
1. Why is there such a hurry to move the Stern Collection out of the Irma Stern's Home The Firs - to now a Safe and Larger premises (possibly this weekend?) 2. What have the UCT/ Nedcore stakeholders and possible affiliated businesses have in mind for the Irma Stern Home and Estate - including Intellectual Property- that must be worth hundreds of millions with land and commodities - are these stakeholders acting in the best interests of Irma Sterns Will- or rather prioritizing its financial interests over national cultural heritage? 3. As a national acclaimed female artist - Has there been any other attempt to bring in this incredible national cultural asset to the Heritage Western Cape, The City of Cape Town to preserve the House as an official museum, learning and outreach cultural centre
We would like to call on yourselves - the guardians of South African Arts and Culture, including The Minister of Arts and Culture, to intervene on this matter- in order to safeguard our Heritage that will benefit the nation culturally and not just seemingly a few, financially.
