The last day of January is finally here. For those who decided to take on Dry January this year (according to statistics, a record 17.5 million people), tomorrow marks the end of the challenge and the opportunity to enjoy a tipple or two.
But before you dive headfirst into a boozy night out, take a moment to think. I don't want to be a buzzkill (spending time out with friends having fun can provide its own benefits for our wellbeing), but as we move into the second month of the year, now's the perfect time to think about how you want to move forward.
This applies to everyone: not just those of us who gave up alcohol. January – with its miserable weather and dark nights – isn't exactly the most inspiring time, so if you've struggled to build new habits or simply spent the first month of the year resting and taking things easy, that's OK. But as we move into February and the days get brighter (seriously, have you seen how light it's getting at 5pm?), why not sit down and set yourself some health and wellbeing-related goals to chase this month?
I've decided, for example, to limit myself to a maximum of two drinking days a week and follow the 20-minute rule when ordering drinks. If you want to move more this year, you could aim to do 1,000 more steps per day on average; if you're looking to improve your diet, you could challenge yourself to try some new healthy recipes.
February can still be a challenging month weather-wise, so don't worry if you've still got the urge to hibernate. But if you're feeling a little more energised, why not give a few small goals a go? You don't need to completely overhaul your life, but having targets to aim for can help you to keep you motivated and provide a sense of achievement.
Have a lovely weekend,
