Joseph Petzval was a scientific buccaneer who led a legendary life, with swashbuckling tales to tell. His lens invention changed the course of photography forever – it corrected aberrations and was 30 times faster than anything of the time. It is extremely important for us to honor his legacy. May we present: the Joseph Petzval Archive. Check it out for the story behind his life, and lenses, as well as historical photographs and how we are keeping his iconic swirl alive.

Petzval Then
We went through archive after archive to find historical photos taken with a Petzval lens to share with you, with the goal of protecting treasures of the analogue past and preserving photography history for future generations. The Petzval Portrait Lens was fast and furious, and brought spontaneity into photography! We want to build our Petzval arhice so if you, or any Lomographer you know, has historical photos to share, send them to us at analoguearchive@lomography.com.

Our Joseph Petzval Art Lenses were built based on the original optical calculations, with features optimized for modern photographers and videographers. This makes it possible to explore the Petzval look for future generations using modern photographic equipment! Jakarta-based photographer and creative professional Rexy brought that lovely Petzval aesthetic to modern portrait photography with the Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Art Lens. Check out their results with the lens's distinct bokeh and sharp center and head to the Lomography Online Shop to discover all our Petzval Art Lenses.

"I rarely have the chance to use a lens with such distinct bokeh characteristics. Since I do have a clean and neat method in composing my frames, I was challenged with a more creative way to handle the unique bokeh characteristics provided by the lens."
