The 2026 Winter Olympics are officially underway—and these Games are particularly supersized.

This year's Olympics—with
roughly 2,900 athletes from more than 90 countries—are so large that they are shared between two host cities for the first time: Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. With events scheduled at 15 venues across northern Italy covering roughly 8,500 square miles, the Milan Cortina Games are the most geographically widespread in history.

And for the athletes, there's more on the line than just gold, silver or bronze: At least 37 of the 92 countries and territories are
offering cash bonuses to any competitor that brings home a medal—with payouts reaching as high as $787,000 for some countries.
