How to Find an Advisor You Trust

Barron's Retirement

By Elizabeth O'Brien | Sunday, March 29

People often lean on personal ties when choosing a financial professional. Maybe the neighborhood kid who used to mow your lawn is all grown up and selling annuities, or your golf buddy's son got a brokerage job and you want to give him some business. With your financial security at stake, it's better to inject some rigor into the process.

This is especially true because investor protections can be confusing. This month, federal courts put the nail in the office of a Biden-era effort to protect retirement savers from conflicted advice when they roll their 401(k)s over into another product, often on the cusp of retirement. The retirement security rule would have required that advisors at this critical juncture act as fidcuiaries–that is, they put clients' needs first.

You might assume that all advisors are legally obligated to put clients' needs ahead of their own. But it's more complicated. Learn more about fiduciary standards in today's edition–and make sure you do your due diligence before hiring an advisor.
