Few executives in the cannabis industry have had more influence in Washington than Kim Rivers.

The 48-year-old CEO of Florida-based Trulieve helped lead a multi-year lobbying campaign to push the federal government to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I substance, like heroin or LSD, to a Schedule III, like Tylenol with codeine.

In December, Rivers was at the White House as President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing then-Attorney General Pam Bondi to begin that process. And while it’s not a done deal quite yet, once the rescheduling is complete, it will be the most significant federal drug reform in nearly 60 years.

“The laws are going to change,” Rivers says. “Momentum has been building. This has really been decades in the making.”
