"I didn't expect Project Hail Mary to hit me quite this hard," says Kayleigh. "Yes, obviously, there's Ryan Gosling in a fluffy jumper and a pair of slutty little glasses, doing that floppy-haired, slightly rumpled, soulful thing he does so well. That alone should be enough (and it is) – but it's also about so much more than that lovable walking green flag.
"No spoilers here but at its core, Project Hail Mary is a story about what humans are capable of when they're trying to do their very best. Unlike so many sci-fi adventures, it's not bleak or coldly perfect or about heroics for the sake of ego. It's about being quietly, stubbornly good and choosing to help, even when it's hard. Especially when it's hard, in fact.
"It's about friendship in its purest form. Connection that cuts through fear, difference and isolation. The kind that makes you believe, even briefly, that empathy might actually win. And considering the state of the world right now, that's no small thing, because we could all be better than this. Kinder. More thoughtful. Choosing, every single day, to protect the environment, look after each other, and make sure no one goes hungry.
"It sounds naive when you write it down, I know that. And I'm as cynical as the next person – my partner was all gooey-eyed over the launch of Artemis II this week, telling me it's a huge leap for humanity, while I was busy counting all the CO₂ it blasted into the atmosphere. Even so, Project Hail Mary makes goodness feel possible, and a better world seem within reach.
"That and the slutty little glasses? Perfect cinema."
