THE VAN THAT NEARLY KILLED STEPHEN KING HAD A STORY WORTH TELLING |
Stephen King has spent his entire career writing about death. Haunted hotels, Rabid dogs, Killer clowns. He invented America's darkest nightmares and made $400 million doing it. |
But on June 19, 1999, death came for him instead. |
King was out walking near his Maine home at 4:30 in the afternoon when Bryan Edwin Smith's van came up the road. Smith's dog was distracting him in the back seat, so he reached around to deal with it and drove straight into King. |
The impact sent King's glasses flying off his head and landing inside the van itself, and he flew 14 feet before landing in a ditch. |
He had a broken hip, a collapsed lung and his right leg was shattered in multiple places. Doctors eventually saved it by drilling metal rods directly through his skin into the bone. |
He needed five operations in ten days, and for months afterwards, could only sit for 40 minutes before the pain became unbearable. |
Doctors prescribed OxyContin. King got addicted, and his family struggled to bring him back |
Meanwhile, Smith received six months in prison and lost his licence for a year. |
And exactly one year after the accident, authorities found Smith dead in his trailer. He had overdosed on painkillers, the same kind King had been fighting to give up. |
And he died on September 21….Stephen King's birthday. |
But the story of the man who hit Stephen King was just getting started. |

THE SPIDER KING WHO TRACKED HIS FATHER'S DEATH WITH ASTROLOGERS |
Louis XI was one of the most powerful kings France ever produced. He unified the country, built spy networks across Europe, and earned the nickname "The Universal Spider" for his cunning and manipulation. |
He was brilliant, ruthless, and completely without mercy. But the darkest story about Louis XI isn't about his enemies but about his father. |
Louis hated Charles VII from the moment he was old enough to form an opinion. By thirteen, he called him a weakling and by sixteen, he raised an army against him and lost. |
But his father still forgave him completely. Louis took the forgiveness and immediately started plotting again. |
He fled to his father's greatest enemy and set up court there. When Charles begged him to come home, Louis refused every time. |
Then in 1458, Charles fell gravely ill. He sent message after message to his son for one last visit...Just once. |
Louis refused. Instead, he hired astrologers to pinpoint exactly when his father would die so he could be ready the moment the throne became available. |
Charles stopped eating and starved himself to death on July 22, 1461, fully aware his son was calculating the hour of his death like a business transaction. |
But in his rush to the throne, what he did to his own wife was something nobody expected from even him. |
