By the early 1970s, David Bowie had already failed at nearly everything. Band after band fell apart and his debut solo album also flopped. Even "Space Oddity," his one real hit, hadn't been enough to keep the momentum going for more than a few years.

So Bowie decided the problem wasn't his music. It was him.

He began imagining a character that fused two of his biggest influences, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, into what he called "the ultimate pop idol."

In 1972, that character stepped onto a stage for the first time: Ziggy Stardust, an androgynous alien rockstar with fiery red hair and psychedelic costumes, designed to look like he'd "landed from Mars."

The response was instant and overwhelming. Ziggy wasn't just a hit, he was a phenomenon. But David found that stardom by disappearing into someone else entirely.

And that was always the trick behind Ziggy's power, and eventually, the danger too. He did interviews as Ziggy, lived as Ziggy and slowly, David started disappearing…

The line between performer and persona blurred so completely that he confessed, "I really did have doubts about my sanity." What began as a costume had become something closer to possession.

After a year of living inside a character he could no longer fully control, Bowie made a drastic decision. In July 1973, mid-concert, he announced his retirement from the stage. The Spiders from Mars disbanded, and Ziggy Stardust was gone for good.

But killing Ziggy Stardust on stage didn't set Bowie free. It just cleared the way for something even darker.
