SHE SHATTERED HOLLYWOOD'S COLOR LINE WHILE CONTROLLING MEN SHATTERED HER PEACE |
Diahann Carroll made television history in 1968. As the star of Julia, she became the first Black woman to headline a show playing someone other than a maid, a widowed single mother with grace and dignity America had almost never seen on screen. |
Millions tuned in every week, and overnight, Carroll was a household name. |
The wins kept coming. A Tony Award for No Strings, the first ever given to a Black woman and an Oscar nomination for Claudine. Years later, she stepped into one of television's juiciest villain roles as Dominique Deveraux on Dynasty, finally free to be delicious and unapologetic on screen. |
But off-screen, her love life told a completely different story. |
While filming Julia, Carroll fell for a man named Alan Marshall, who couldn't stand living in her shadow. He mocked her fame, needled her about her wealth, and treated her success like a personal insult. When she finally worked up the nerve to leave him, she came home the next day and found him waiting. |
He beat her so viciously he screamed he would "ruin her face." |
That single, terrifying night finally woke her up, and she got out for good. But somehow, the pattern kept repeating. |
A whirlwind marriage that lasted months before her husband turned into what she called a "raging bully." A magazine editor who stalked her onto a plane, orchestrated their entire wedding himself, then secretly sold exclusive coverage of it to his own publication without telling her a thing. |
Then came Vic Damone, the man she was certain would finally be different. |
But behind the glamour of that relationship, Damone did something so shocking it shattered every illusion Carroll had left. |

EUROPE'S MOST DANGEROUS SPY OUTSMARTED THE NAZIS WITH ONE WOODEN LEG |
During WWII, the Gestapo hunted one Allied spy harder than any other, calling her "the most dangerous of all Allied spies" in occupied Europe. They threw their full intelligence network at finding her, but what they never realized, for years, was that the woman they feared most was doing it all on one wooden leg. |
Virginia Hall grew up in Baltimore, where her mother pictured a quiet future for her: marriage, children, a settled life. But Hall had other plans. |
She studied languages at Columbia, became fluent in French, German, and Italian, and took a post at the American Embassy in Warsaw, unknowingly preparing herself for the war still years away. |
In 1933, everything changed in an instant. On a hunting trip in Turkey, Hall tripped and accidentally fired a bullet into her own foot. The wound was severe enough that doctors had to amputate her leg below the knee. |
She named her new prosthetic "Cuthbert" and, rather than let it slow her down, treated it like a companion for the adventures still ahead. |
Diplomats denied her a promotion, but when war broke out in 1939, she found her way into the fight anyway, driving ambulances through minefields and eventually becoming one of Britain's first female spies. |
As captured agents began whispering her description under interrogation, the Gestapo started plastering wanted posters across France for "la dame qui boite," the limping lady. |
But even after cheating death again and again, what Hall did years later revealed exactly who she truly was underneath it all. |
