AMERICA'S MOST TRUSTED HOST WALKED AWAY FROM A 20-YEAR JOB OVER ONE DEMAND |
For 35 years, Bob Barker was one of the most trusted faces on American television, guiding contestants through The Price Is Right with the kind of warmth that made him feel like a family friend to millions of viewers. |
Alongside that role, Barker held another major hosting gig for two full decades: the Miss USA pageant on CBS, a position he'd occupied longer than anyone else in the show's history. |
Behind the scenes, Barker's life had quietly transformed. After losing his wife Dorothy Jo to lung cancer in 1981, he threw himself into animal rights activism, a cause she had inspired in him years earlier. |
He became a vegetarian, started ending every episode of The Price Is Right with a message about pet population control, and grew increasingly vocal about animal welfare. |
That growing passion eventually collided head-on with his career. |
In 1987, Barker approached the Miss USA pageant with a demand: remove fur coats from the show's prize lineup. It wasn't a request he expected to be difficult. To him, it was simply consistent with everything he now stood for. |
But the producers refused. Barker didn't back down either. |
He walked away from the pageant entirely, ending his 20-year run as host over a principle nobody had forced him to take a stand on. |
But that single stand against the pageant was only the beginning of a much bigger war Barker was about to wage. |

A TOWN OFFERED $10,000 FOR SOMEONE TO STEAL BUFFALO BILL'S BODY FROM ITS GRAVE |
Buffalo Bill Cody turned himself into the most famous man in America without ever really trying to. He scouted for the army, hunted buffalo by the thousands, then discovered something more profitable than either: telling people stories about himself. |
His Wild West show toured the world, performed for Queen Victoria, and made "Buffalo Bill" a household name on two continents. |
When he died in January 1917, his family honored his wish to be buried on Lookout Mountain, overlooking Denver, Colorado. |
But the people of Cody, Wyoming, never accepted it. |
They believed Buffalo Bill belonged in the town he'd built, not scattered across a Colorado overlook hundreds of miles away. For decades, resentment simmered quietly beneath the surface. |
Then in 1948, the local chapter of the American Legion in Cody decided to do something about it. They offered a staggering reward, $ 10,000, roughly $131,000 in today's money, to anyone willing to steal Buffalo Bill's remains from Lookout Mountain and bring them home to Wyoming. |
Colorado authorities took the threat seriously, and the Denver Legion stationed armed guards over the gravesite to protect it. |
To this day, Buffalo Bill's official grave remains on Lookout Mountain, open to tourists who want to pay their respects. |
But what still gets whispered about Cedar Mountain today suggests somebody may have collected that $10,000 after all. |
