GOLDEN HOLLYWOOD'S LAST SURVIVOR WAS ONCE HOWARD HUGHES'S PRISONER |
Gina Lollobrigida survived Nazi occupation as a child, fled her home with nothing, and clawed her way into acting despite a husband who doubted she'd ever succeed. |
By 23, she'd become one of Italy's most promising young stars, beautiful enough that Humphrey Bogart himself once said she made Marilyn Monroe look plain. |
That beauty caught Howard Hughes's eye. |
Hughes spotted a photo of Lollobrigida in a bikini and became instantly obsessed. He dangled the ultimate temptation: a screen test in Hollywood, the kind of opportunity that could launch her into American stardom. |
But when she landed in Los Angeles, his agents swept her straight to a luxury hotel suite that looked like a dream and functioned like a cage. Guards stood outside her door, not to protect her, but to keep her from leaving without him. Her phone calls never made it through. |
There was no screen test either. There never had been one, not unless she gave Hughes what he actually wanted. |
She refused him. Every day, every proposition, every attempt to wear her down, she refused him. Hughes didn't take it well. |
On the night of her farewell party, he made sure she drank far more than she should have, then slid a contract in front of her, promising it was harmless. She signed it, tipsy and struggling with English she barely spoke. |
That signature locked her out of working with any American studio for years. |
But Gina wasn't finished. What she did to finally break free of Hughes's grip became one of the boldest power moves in Hollywood history. |

HISTORY'S MOST RUTHLESS CONQUEROR TOOK HIS BURIAL SECRET TO HIS GRAVE, LITERALLY |
Genghis Khan built the largest contiguous empire the world has ever seen, stretching from the Pacific to the edges of Europe, all through conquest so brutal that entire cities were reduced to pyramids of skulls in his wake. |
By 1227, after decades of relentless warfare, his body finally started to fail him. Historians still debate what actually killed him, but as he lay dying, Khan made one final demand of his men. |
He wanted his burial place kept a permanent secret, hidden from history entirely. |
His army took the order seriously enough to make sure nobody would ever betray it, even by accident. |
Roughly 2,000 slaves were ordered to dig his grave and carry out his burial. The moment they finished, the guards overseeing them killed every single one. |
Then those guards met the same fate. A second group of soldiers executed them too, eliminating anyone who might reveal the location. |
Finally, that second group scoured the surrounding countryside, hunting down anyone who might have glimpsed the burial procession from a distance, killing them as well. |
Once the trail was fully erased, those remaining soldiers took their own lives. |
To this day, historians still don't know where Genghis Khan is actually buried. |
But even centuries later, the search for Khan's final resting place has never stopped, and what one expedition claims to have discovered could rewrite the mystery entirely. |
